This is a manuscript style score to this piece which was originally composed in with several revisions with the last in The saxophone and trumpet solos are not identical but have differences to suit the character of each instrument. Prelude, II. Idyll, and III. The accompanying instruments are flute, four B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet bass clarinet alternate , bass clarinet, tuba, and one percussion.

Parts are a rental. Seesaw Music, , SS, includes instrumental parts and vocal-piano score. The vocal range is from the D just above middle C to B-flat above the staff. The instrumental parts are very important, with the flute part especially challenging. The saxophone part reaches altissimo G-sharp. College level with a duration of about 14 minutes. As Mule wrote, this piece proves the contrary. It opens with the Prelude which is dark and jazz influenced. The Cadence is built primarily on rapid arpeggios and is followed by a transitional piano section leading into the Finale which begins rapidly but alternates between sections similar to the beginning before accelerating again to the conclusion.

The piano part is very important and requires a skilled player. Carlos Gardel , who grew up in Argentina, was a singer, songwriter and actor, and is one of the most prominent figures in the history of tango. This piece was written in , refers to the Spanish horse-racing phrase meaning "by a head", which refers to a horse winning a race by the length of one head. The lyrics speak of a compulsive horse-track gambler who compares his addiction to horses with his attraction to women.

Richard Lane had just left Cape Cod, where he spent his summers composing, and suffered a stroke while driving back to his home in Paterson, New Jersey. He was urgently taken to Newark University Hospital, but nine days later, he passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy of over unpublished works.

With the first opportunity, he flew to Paterson to take possession of the manuscripts. The manuscripts lay in chaos all over the place but were now finally saved from most probable destruction. It was then that Dimitrakoulakos vowed to create a detailed works catalogue, discovering more than works of various difficulty levels and instrumentations, including the piano sonatas, true masterpieces that showcase all the talent and originality of Richard Lane.

From to his parents offered him private lessons with renowned pianist Isadore Freeman, who was an active chamber musician with members of the New York Philharmonic. At eighteen, Lane received a full scholarship piano and composition to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY , where he completed his academic studies in , graduating with a masters in music. During this time, he composed many works for his friends, peers and professionals. When the Ford Foundation launched its Young Composers Project in , Lane was one of the 12 young artists selected to breathe new life into the public school music system in different US states with new musical works.

At the age of 28, Richard Lane returned permanently to his hometown of Paterson NJ, where he earned his living giving private music lessons and performing as a pianist. Lane composed tirelessly and dedicated his works to his young and older students, to famous performers, chamber ensembles, choirs, wind bands and orchestras.
